Having recorded Everybody’s Song But My Own in 1987, John and I found ourselves discussing another recording and the musical direction we might take. Fortuitously we were approached by Sentinel and invited to spend a few days in Cornwall recording and experimenting with new material and sounds.

I owned a Roland D50 synthesizer which John took away with the manual, and studiously woodshedded, re-programmed and quickly got to grips with its capabilities. On this recording we experimented using the synthesizer in improvised duets, as well as performing our compositions with John on piano. Some of the new pieces were conceived on site.

Apart from piano John played various keyboards always in his own unique manner. A renowned Fender Rhodes player he used a pair of Fender twin reverb amps, giving an exciting stereo personal sound on live performances. He used the EMS Synthi-sequencer with Azimuth as well as the Crumar organ. Whatever instrument he played on, it always sounded like J.T. with his wonderful sense of tonal colour.

The stylistic mix in the music on this recording was born from our shared eclectic taste in music. We both enjoyed Messiaen, Bartok, Frank Bridge and more as well as a great wealth of jazz legends, many of whom John worked with in his years as accompanist at Ronnie Scotts.

Visiting John in Kent we would enjoy a drink at the village hostelry return to his cottage and have fun playing through some flute and piano pieces by Hindemith, Dutilleux and Prokofiev, as well as improvising our way through John’s scrapbook of musical ideas.

You can hear the ‘jazz’ history in Pure & Simple, Ocean Deep and Q, as well as European contemporary music influences in the free duets with synthesizer and the flute and piano piece CD Smith.

It was a great privilege to have spent so many years playing with John Taylor in so many varied combinations. He was a huge influence on me, a wonderful improviser and great accompanist.

I would like to dedicate this recording to his memory and hope you will join us in enjoying some of the musical fun and surprises in a sound world not so often associated with John Taylor in his later

It is only now - 26 years after it was recorded in 1990 - that we've had the opportunity to release this album. It is a testament to its quality that it's more than stood the test of time. The interaction between Stan and John, coupled with their precision and musicality is as listenable and exciting today as in the original performances.
